At Fox Therapy Services, we believe in a nurturing, positive, fun therapy environment. We want our kids to feel excited to come to see us! Additionally, we encourage family members to be involved during therapy sessions. This allows for parents/caregivers to learn how to best encourage and support their child’s communication progress at home and to participate even more as their child’s expressive language skills improve. Therapy sessions are held in our clinic.
Evaluations are strongly encouraged before beginning therapy. Depending on the reason why you are considering therapy for your child, an evaluation may be required to assure that we provide the most effective and appropriate therapy for your child. Evaluations typically take about one to two hours and are conducted in our clinic.
The assessment will examine your child’s speech, receptive and expressive language skills and pragmatic (social) skills. Once the evaluation is complete, you will receive a detailed report explaining our findings and indicating if therapy is recommended. In cases where therapy is recommended, the assessment report will include a treatment plan and goals to be addressed during therapy sessions.
Throughout the program, parents are coached on how to assist their child in reaching these three goals:
This program was developed for parents of children up to 5 years of age on the autism spectrum and with other social communication difficulties.
PROMPT is an acronym for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets.
PROMPT, provided by a PROMPT-trained clinician, is a tactile-kinesthetic approach to speech production disorders that can be used with children as young as 6 months. The technique uses touch cues to develop motor control and the development of oral muscular movements while stopping muscle movements that are not needed. PROMPT therapy is appropriate for a wide range of patients with communication disorders. The most common patients of PROMPT are those with motor speech disorders (such as apraxia), articulation problems (trouble producing specific sounds) or are non-verbal children. PROMPT has also been proven to help patients with aphasia, apraxia/dyspraxia, dysarthria, pervasive development disorders, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injuries and autism spectrum disorders
1. Not babbling at age 4-7 months. A baby who seems strangely quiet and isn’t experimenting with sounds through babbling could be showing signs of a language disorder, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
2. Lack of gesturing. If your child doesn’t express herself by making gestures such as pointing and waving (or makes very few gestures) at the age of 7-12 months, that could be another indication of a possible language disorder, ASHA states.
3. Issues with verbal requests. Children between 12 and 24 months old should be able to comprehend simple spoken requests, according to KidsHealth. If your son or daughter doesn’t seem to understand your instructions, he or she could have a language development issue.
4. Not speaking in sentences. Between the ages of 1.5 to 2 years, kids should start putting words together to form sentences. If your toddler is struggling to make sentences, that might be a good reason to get your son or daughter screened for a language disorder.
5. Trouble making certain sounds. Children with speech disorders might have issues producing p, b, m, h, and w sounds in words the majority of the time from 1 to 2 years old and/or trouble pronouncing k, g, f, t, d, and n from 2 to 3 years old, according to ASHA. Their speech might also just seem generally unclear and hard to understand when they are 2 to 3 years old.
If your child shows any of these signs or seems to have other speech and/or language issues, it’s best to seek help as soon as possible.
