Stuttering impacts the fluency of speech.  It is a communication disorder that is characterized by involuntary disruptions, or disfluencies, in the production of speech sounds and syllables.  There are multiple types of disfluencies that can occur as a result of stuttering. Some examples include:

  • Repetitions:  Part-word- H-H-H-How are you?  Or whole-word- How How How are you?
  • Interjections: How um um um are you?
  • Sound prolongations: SSSS ee you later.
